The home's story...

At Go Realty we believe that every house has a story and no one can tell it better than the owners themselves. This is a special home with a special story.

642 Rebecca Lane, Siler City, NC 27344
Silk Hope Community in the heart of Chatham County

In January 2008, our family endured a life-changing experience when my husband, a Staff  Sergeant in the Marine Corps, was in an accident and suffered a spinal cord injury which left him paralyzed.

As we searched for an accessible home in the Triangle area, we were finding it difficult to find a house that suited our needs. We wanted a 3 bed/2 bath home, on at least one acre of land, in a private setting. My husband, always the outdoors man and mechanic, wanted a home that could offer us privacy, a large garage to work on various cars/projects, a large fenced area for the kids and the pets, a raised garden, a outdoor fire pit (for those weekly family bonfires) and some space for us to utilize some of our favorite outdoor toys (4-wheelers). We wanted to have our space, but it was important to me that there was a sense of community.

We found it virtually impossible to find what we wanted, so we decided to go the route of building a home. We spent quite a few weeks emailing/calling builders in the area to inquire if they would build an accessible home. It was especially challenging because one of the guidelines we had was to have a Veterans Affairs Representative over-see the entire construction of the build to ensure it met the VA standards for accessibility. After several failed attempts, we met a man named Stan Williams (owner of Stanton Homes) who was building in a community called Cattail Creek and he had some lots available in an area known as Silk Hope in the heart of Chatham County.

We had spent almost a year in a house where all the bedrooms were on the second floor and after two months of carrying my husband’s chair up the stairs and assisting him crawling up/down the stairs we finally broke down and got a chair-lift, which was a necessity, but an eye-sore and inconvenient. The chair-lift solved one problem of getting him up/down the stairs, but various other problems with that house remained (the only bathroom on the main level was not wide enough for his wheel chair to get in). This is why, when we moved into 642 Rebecca Lane in March 2009, our lives literally changed. My husband had this new found freedom of mobility that had escaped him in our previous house - he could now get around the house by himself in his wheelchair, which any man (disabled or not) would desire.

To be honest, I was a little intimidated about the drive from our house to gas stations, stores, parks, etc. When we moved in, our kids were 1.5 and almost 3 years old. I am social woman, who enjoys play dates and various other active/social affairs. I was relieved to find that our house was centrally located, and after about two weeks of driving to/from the gas station/store, it became really easy and the kids tolerated it without a fuss. We could drive less than 20 minutes and be in Siler City and visit their vast array of local artists at the NC Art Incubator, we could be in Chapel Hill at a coffee shop or restaurant, we could be in Pittsboro at one of their awesome uniquely designed parks, we could be in Apex going to the movies, hit the Zoo in Asheboro or venture to Saxapahaw for the authentic offerings it has.

Not to mention, what was in our own backyard! Silk Hope was a treasure trove of amazing finds! Shakori Hills is alive with the various music and dance festivities it holds with a draw being the fantastic local food choices! Body Therapy Institute is just minutes away and is a premier place for world-class massage and body work education. Not to mention, that four times per year, the school (via their well-educated students) offers fabulous 50-minute massages for $25 (and it’s accessible!)! I know this to be true, because I was a student there and found the education to not only be amazing and effective, but very therapeutic to my own emotional-recovery after our life-shift – plus I learned a very skilled trade that benefited my husband’s condition. There is also the Silk Hope Heritage Park: I can’t tell you how many times we have taken the kids there to watch tractor-pulls, car auctions, horse-riding, etc. Northwest District Park is a diamond in the rough! Our neighborhood has an adult co-ed softball team and they practice at this field two-times per week during the season, my family has also rented it out for my son’s birthday party, and I taught Zumba classes there for almost a year - this park is an outdoor adventure with paddle boats and hiking trails, soccer field and a fun playground. Plus, it offers a great option for summer day camps for the kids during the summer!  This community is bustling with fun opportunities.

And it’s not just the community of Silk Hope; Cattail Creek is a very family-friendly neighborhood! There is a monthly book club for the ladies (it’s on hiatus during the summer months) which is a fabulous time of fellowship and socializing (we took a weekend trip to Asheville two years ago!), there are the 4th of July neighborhood parties, the New Year’s white-elephant gift-exchange party, the annual paint-ball battle, the Halloween trick-or-treat neighborhood parade, the semi-annual neighborhood yard-sales, etc… not to mention the oh-so-common family bon-fires, movie nights, or the men’s corn-hole gathering. It’s a great neighborhood made up of families who like the space and privacy of their own homes, but really enjoy the community-feel of a neighborhood like this. There is a big outdoor draw to this neighborhood. Many of the men belong to the local gun-club, hunt together, go fishing together, and ride 4-wheelers together. We have also set up a Neighborhood Watch to ensure the safety of all of our neighbors – last year we invited the Sheriff’s department to come and do a bike-rodeo which taught the kids bike safety, rules of the road, and even provided them with helmets. Our neighborhood is one of a kind: we are very neighbor-friendly but also respect the privacy of others who may not want the socialization. This neighborhood has a good deal of teachers in it, police/sheriff/game wardens, work-from-home and stay-at-home families.

When we built this house and settled into this community, we really felt it would be our forever home. We invested our time and lives into this area and we are forever thankful and blessed that we did. The schools offered here, the people in this neighborhood, the things this County has to offer are simply amazing and top-notch. But our course has changed and we have to move on to face our next adventure. And although it will be hard to say goodbye to this house we built (which changed our lives), to our friends/neighbors, to this farm-friendly family-oriented outdoor-loving community we are excited to offer this opportunity to another family. The opportunities here are rich and alive with sustenance and assurance. It is our hope that whoever moves into 642 Rebecca Lane will love it and enjoy it as much as we do.
